Random 5 : While it Snows Outside

1.  I'll never tire of finding Lego creations around the house.
We had an impressive rocket stationed in our kitchen for most of January.  February has been all about castles & such.

2.  There's rarely been a day when I haven't been painting in the past couple of weeks.
Flooring is down in our new room.  Moving right along!  Time for an update soon.

3.  It snowed today.  The boys' basketball game was canceled this evening.  Apparently we're amidst a winter storm warning.  I'm curious to see what we'll wake to in the morning.

4.  Speaking of snow, we got a car last week.  Not normally something I'd share, but after being a large truck & SUV family for several years, filling up the gas tank of a car is reason for a little "woop! woop!"
The time has come with the older boys now driving & the varied direction of our days, that we rarely need the seven passenger seating any longer.  I'm thrilled to have a more fuel efficient vehicle as my road runner.  However - there's something to be said for 4 wheel drive in heavy snow.  It's been a long time since I've been without it!

5.  I've read 7 novels in the first 7 weeks of 2014.
My loose goal is to read 50 novels this year, aiming for about one a week.  I feel like I've had little time to read, but I'm on pace so far.
This week I read Life of Pi.  A very perplexing story.
Any must read novels I should add to my list?

Want to say thanks for all of the kind words for Beau's Birthday!
He really got a kick out of learning that he had greetings from all around the world.  Fun!

  1. I miss the Lego days... treasure them :)
Great snow photo - though I'm glad the UK has missed snow this year - had enough with the flood waters...
Great Random 5 and have a fab Friday :)

  9. I love your kitchen! I finished Life After Life a couple of weeks ago, and really enjoyed it. After our beautiful weather we woke up yesterday morning to 2" of slush and now the temps are dropping again. My driveway is looking a little like a glacier. Have a great weekend!

  13. Amanda,

Glad the house addition project is moving along. Looking forward to pictures.

I see we have a fresh layer of the white stuff this morning. The majority of yesterday it was horrible windy. I don't like being woken up to roaring wind and fighting it during the day. By mid-afternoon the wind was reasonable enough that J and I did some work outside.

Yeah for a new vehicle. I hope you enjoy it!

I want to read Life of Pi; the movie ads looked good. "The Husband's Secret" is a good book I finished earlier this week. The one I am reading now is a little sketchy, but got high star ratings on Amazon.

  15. Your kitchen is beautiful! Love how bright it is! That sure is a lot of snow, and if can't say I have ever experienced that kind of big snow.

  16. oh, that snow. loved your lego find. :)

  17. I enjoyed your snow photo -- and I'm glad it's up there rather than down here with us. I imagine 4-wheel drive is almost necessary to get around with the amount of snow you get. Good luck on your reading program. I never seem to have enough time to read as much as I would like.

  18. Here are some book recommends for you: I'm currently reading The Light Between the Oceans. Book club this month was The Language of Flowers. Have you read Solomon's Oak and it's sequel Finding Casey by Jo-Ann Mapson? Do you read Anne Tyler? I lately read Saint Maybe which was a good one.

Good luck with your resolve to read 50 books. And spring can't be far away now with the way the light is becoming stronger each day.

I'm up in NH until tomorrow enjoying the new grandchild.

  19. Hi there, Congrats on the fuel-efficient car.. We drive a Toyota Prius --and the gas mileage is fabulous!!! BUT--sometimes when we are in the mountains, I wish we did have a 4-wheel drive....

We save inside work for rainy/snowy days... Otherwise, we are usually outside working in the yard. I'd much rather be outside working than inside working... ha

Have a great weekend---and stay WARM and stay SAFE.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  20. What great Lego creations. Coleen never really got into playing with them for some reason.
Wow that is some snow you've got going on there.
    Congrats on the new car.

  21. So I know I've said it before but I'll say it again - I am in love with your kitchen! The cabinets, wooden hood, concrete countertops...I love it all! And that photo is just so lovely with the light streaming in. Just a perfect slice of your life.

I can't really even tell what's going on in that snowy photo other than a ton of snow! Holy cow. I hope you guys can dig out soon.

  22. oh, I remember the lego days...and stepping all over them! They would keep my boys occupied for hours....much better than the tv.

50 novels! I hope you get there. I just finished re-reading The Secret Garden, one of my very favorites.

  23. Glad to hear you are still on course with your reading. Once you get painting it seems never ending.

  24. Amanda - go to my book review page. Maybe something will catch your interest. (Haven't had a chance to update it for 2014.) I am still seeing Lego creations around the house - this time from Grandchildren. Don't get buried under too much snow!

  25. Thats some snow! We spend a reasonable amount of time in our national parks - I like a car that pushes all four wheels!!

Not much of a novel reader - but I post comments of the books I read on my photoblog - you may find something of interest there!

  26. SO much snow ... Thank you for all your snow-images! The Lego looks so cozy, were having Warhammer-figures at the moment :) Congratulations with the new car - it must be different now that the boys have gotten drives license. And the Vanilla Milk sounds delicious ... We must try that as well (those tiny white marsmallows are cute :)
I look forward of hearing your next books ... I can recommend Sissel Jo-Gacan's The Dinosaur Feather (I have her 2nd book - The Grapho of the Swallow, that Iøm about to read next)-
    Enjoy your weekend, Amanda!

  27. Your kitchen seems so open, light and welcoming, room for all - even lego. A car, a reason for celebration. When we bought a small car for our first ever second vehicle a couple of years ago it took a little getting use to driving as I'd driven nothing but our 14 seater bus for about 4 years. Felt like I was driving a go-cart. I love driving both now - parking is a pleasure in the car!
Looking forward to seeing your extensions complete - very exciting.

  28. Novel suggestion: The Magic of Ordinary Days by Ann Howard Creel.

Hallmark made a movie version of it, too - beautiful.

    You have a lovely site.(:
