Random 5 : Life right now

1.  I watched a grouse in the sumac in our backyard today.
The wild sumac around our yard is the only tree with any fruit left on it over the winter.
I've only seen it cleared of it's red clusters in the early spring when birds seem hard put to find anything else to eat.

2.  A sign of spring:  This old boy, who doesn't like the winter cold but loves to bask in the sun, was able to lay on our back deck (free of snow!) for the first time since last fall.  Today it's covered in snow again.  We've had lots of extended wintry weather, but when the sun is out it feels glorious.

3.  Some of Mitch's work (this cabin he built) is featured in an article in the current issue of Cabin Life Magazine.  They sent us a copy in the mail.  I received a call this week from a lady who happened to pick up a copy at her grocery store in Oregon and was interested to learn more about that cabin.  Nifty!

4.  April Fool's Day - I was duped.
In the innocent disguise of a quiet, empty house after everyone was off to school, I went to fill a pot of water for my morning tea.
When I turned on the faucet, I was blasted with cold water from the kitchen sink sprayer - aimed directly at me.  The kids put a rubber band around the trigger before they left for school.  They've all tried to get me with this prank in the past, and this time they got me good!

5.  Last week when sharing things I'm thankful for right now, I mentioned specific academic highlights of Mason, Eric, & Beau's.  Johnathan & Lilly are doing great, too -  they both brought home special awards for the end of 3rd quarter.   They were the voted / chosen recipients of the 4th & 5th grade Citizenship & Responsibility Awards.
Johnathan's teacher sent me a very kind message
including this: "You've created a wonderful human being!"   I think as a mom, that is the ultimate hope & goal. To create good human beings.
It meant a lot to hear that from a fellow mom &
outstanding teacher.

  2. Congratulations on the wonderful young people you are raising. No matter what their academic achievement, being good people is the important thing. I feel like the most blessed grandparent with both children and 6 grandchildren, all of whom are good and caring people.
I would love to live in that magnificent cabin. So nice to have someone ring you after the article.

  4. Amanda,

Neat set of pictures this morning! The color and contrast in the first picture is artistic. Our 4 legged family members have a knack for finding the sunbeam.

Congrats to Mitch on the cabin feature, awesome!

Yeah for you and Mitch that you are raising a good group of kids. I am sure that makes your cup runneth over.

  7. I'm not at all surprised that Johnathan and Lilly also got awards from the schools, and the teacher's remark is five-times valid. It's neat that the cabin Mitch built got written up, but I hope that doesn't mean he'll be going to Oregon to build another.

  9. How cool that your hubby was published. What a compliment. And a even bigger compliment is when the teach stated that you created a good human being. I don't think it gets any better than that. My hubby would love to build a cabin someday when we stop RVing. He talks about it all the time. Heck we don't even know where we will end up when we are all done. I do hope you have a happy weekend.

    Hugs~

  10. Congratulations on the publication! Very cool! I love the photo of your dog. Our pug loves to bask in the sun on warm spring days and then comes into the house panting. But it's nice for a while.

  11. Hi Amanda,
That's about the most wonderful greeting you can get from a teacher ... So wonderful! And to have a teacher that notices these qualities and remembers to tell them to a parent is a precious gift.
Congratulations on the article with Mitch's project - I hope he will be contacted with new project inquiries! Your sing of spirng is a sweet one ... Sending cuddles behind his ears - I relax just by watchin him sleep :)
    Enjoy the weekend,
    hugs Nina

  12. I don't know if a life with kids can be "wildly simple" - not when they're still living with you - when they're out of the house you'll be amazed that you'll have gobs of time to yourself (to do whatever you please:):) )

  27. Congrats to the kids, you and Mitch! I had to chuckle at the April fools prank :)
Our Sadie loves winter and doesn't care for summer, she's a lab and loves the snow. We see a lot of birds in the sumac trees behind our home as well when it's a long snowy winter. Have a wonderful weekend.
